“Ehool” stands as a groundbreaking milestone in Manipuri cinema, marking its place as the region’s first web series. This audacious leap into digital storytelling has set a new standard for the industry, blending comedy, drama, and romance in a captivating narrative crafted by the visionary Tenzing Pukhrambam.

From its modest debut with only a few thousand views, Ehool has experienced a remarkable surge in popularity, with each new episode drawing increasing attention and acclaim. This meteoric rise underscores the series’ compelling content and the growing appetite for innovative digital media in Manipur.

What sets Ehool apart is its celebration of diversity. The series proudly features characters and cast members from a wide range of communities, including Kabui, Mao, Poumai, and Tangkhul etc. This inclusive approach not only enriches the narrative but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of Manipur. By showcasing a variety of perspectives and experiences, Ehool has become a trailblazer, challenging traditional storytelling methods and providing a fresh platform for Manipuri cinema.

Combining contemporary issues with cultural nuances, Ehool offers a mirror to modern life while staying deeply rooted in Manipuri traditions. Its success is a powerful testament to the evolving landscape of Manipuri cinema and the expanding potential for web-based content in the region.

As we delve deeper into the success of Ehool, we had the delightful opportunity to chat with Tenzing Pukhrambam, the visionary behind this heartwarming comedy-drama romance. Tenzing shares with us the inspiration that sparked Ehool, the hurdles faced during its creation, and his future ambitions in the film industry.

Q. What inspired you to write Ehool, and how did you develop the storyline?
A. The spark for Ehool was ignited through a collaboration with a previous director who was eager to explore new horizons in Manipuri cinema, especially through web series. Our aim was to provide a stage for aspiring actors from our state and we have an academy (GBDA) Ganas Beauty and Dance Academy, who, despite their immense talent, had limited opportunities. Ehool became more than just a story; it was a platform for these young stars to shine. The series intricately weaves the emotional journey of a person from childhood to adulthood, exploring themes of family, love, career challenges, and selfdiscovery. The name Ehool, meaning “Emotion,” beautifully encapsulates the essence of the narrative.

Q. What motivated you to pursue writing?
A. From a young age, I was enchanted by the magic of cinema and storytelling. Movies have always been a profound source of inspiration for me. The unwavering support from my family and loved ones nurtured my passion and encouraged me to delve into writing. Their belief in me, combined with my own fascination with stories and narratives, fueled my desire to create and innovate.

Q. What key messages did you aim to convey through Ehool?
A. At the heart of Ehool is the theme of unity. Manipur’s rich cultural diversity often gets limited exposure in local cinema. With Ehool, we sought to celebrate this diversity by including communities like Kabui, Mao, Poumai, and Tangkhul, reflecting the vibrant tapestry of our culture. The series underscores the importance of coming together and embracing our differences. The season finale promises even more surprises with new characters from various communities, further amplifying this message.

Q. What challenges did you face while writing Ehool, given its unique cultural setting?
A. Navigating cultural sensitivities was one of the primary challenges. We meticulously researched to ensure that the portrayal of customs, attire, and dialects was respectful and accurate. Choosing the right locations and working with actors from diverse backgrounds, many of whom were new to on-screen acting, also presented its own set of challenges. Despite these hurdles, the journey was incredibly rewarding, and the experience of learning and growing together with the cast and crew was truly enriching.

Q. How do you feel about the reception of Ehool from both local and broader audiences?
A. The response has been nothing short of heartwarming. Initially, we had our doubts due to modest early viewership, but as the episodes continued to roll out, the audience’s enthusiasm soared. The overwhelming support and rising viewership numbers have been a pleasant surprise and a testament to the connection we’ve forged with our audience. We are profoundly grateful for their encouragement and for making Ehool a success.

Q. How do you see storytelling evolving in Manipuri cinema, and what future trends do you anticipate?
A. Manipuri cinema is on the cusp of exciting changes, with a growing interest in web series and diverse storytelling. While formal training facilities are still developing, the emergence of talented writers with fresh ideas is promising. I envision Manipuri cinema rising to become a prominent player in the entertainment industry. Personally, I’m looking forward to exploring various genres, including documentaries and thrillers, in addition to my current focus on web series.

Q. Can you share any upcoming projects or future plans?
A. I’m excited to share that I’m working on a new web series titled “SYMPHAN”, which delves into the struggles of youth in Manipur facing employment challenges. The series explores the harsh reality of having to set aside one’s passions due to a lack of opportunities. We also have several feature film projects in the works that I’m looking forward to.

Q. What message would you give to aspiring screenwriters?
A. To aspiring screenwriters, I’d say: Embrace your curiosity and passion. Observe the world around you, understand people’s emotions, and immerse yourself in diverse experiences. Manipur’s vibrant communities offer rich stories and perspectives that can deeply enhance your storytelling.

Q. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
A. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Kangba Lovejoy and the entire team for their exceptional collaboration. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in bringing Ehool to life. Additionally, I wish for peace and harmony in Manipur. It’s the collective compassion and effort of everyone involved that truly makes our projects meaningful, and I am eager to see how we can
continue to enrich our community and industry with our work.

Sangrilla Hijam
Let’s get to know our cast for Ehool. First up is Sangrilla Hijam, one of the standout talents in Manipuri cinema. Hailing from Sagoband Tera and currently a student of OT Technician, Sangrilla is the second among four siblings. Her acting journey began during her school days through various co-curricular activities under the guidance of her teachers. “Since childhood, I always participated in many co-curricular activities, especially in acting, under the guidance of my teachers,” she shares. Her entry into the film industry was
marked by a friend’s invitation to join an album project, setting the stage for her career. In Ehool, Sangrilla found her character to be a natural extension of herself. “This particular character is similar to myself and it suits me too. So, I had fun portraying this character,” she says. Her preparation included acting classes with the Ehool team, where they engaged in discussions to overcome challenges and improve their skills.

Reflecting on the filming process, Sangrilla notes that the entire experience was memorable. “Since the start until the end of shooting Ehool, I made a lot of immense experiences that I’ll always cherish forever,” she recalls. A poignant moment was the emotional last day of shooting, where the cast and crew felt deeply connected. The success of Ehool has significantly influenced Sangrilla’s
career. “After Ehool, it has helped shape my career to a great extent. I think it has also helped in bringing all the communities together as one in Manipuri cinema,” she explains. Her portrayal resonated with audiences, leading to much positive feedback.

Among the lighter moments on set, Sangrilla points out Jackson Yumnam as the most likely to forget his lines, adding humor to their time together. The initial stages of filming posed challenges, but the support from fellow cast members was crucial. “The initial stage of shooting Ehool was a tough experience for me. I overcame it with the motivation from all the members,” she notes. Looking ahead, Sangrilla keeps her upcoming projects private but attributes Ehool’s success to the hard work and dedication of the entire team. “Hard work and dedication of the cast and crew members led to its success and significant
popularity,” she says.

Sangrilla Hijam’s portrayal of Angobi in Ehool has left a lasting impression on audiences. Her character, radiating warmth and positivity, beautifully captures the essence of simplicity and sincerity. Viewers have praised her ability to convey deep emotional nuances, revealing a character who, despite outward cheerfulness, carries a poignant inner life. Sangrilla’s performance resonates with many for its authenticity and heartfelt depth, making Angobi a memorableand beloved part of the series.

Jackson Yumnam
As we continue our journey into the world of Ehool, let’s turn the spotlight to another talented actor from the series. Next, we’ll explore the story and experiences of Jackson Yumnam, a multi-talented actor, choreographer, and dancer, hails from Haokha in Thoubal, Manipur. He comes from a supportive family, with his parents, Yumnam Bimola and Yumnam Igocha, being his pillars of strength. As the youngest of four siblings, Jackson grew up with one elder sister and two elder brothers, forming a close-knit family unit. Having successfully completed his graduation, he is currently in his second year of a dance diploma at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy. His passion for dance, combined with his enthusiasm for football, has been a significant part of his life.

Jackson’s entry into the Manipuri film industry was serendipitous. Initially, his passion was soccer, but his elder sister encouraged him to explore dance. He began performing at various local and state-level competitions, securing first place and receiving immense appreciation. This positive experience sparked his interest in the Manipuri cinema, leading him to pursue a career in acting. The encouragement and recognition he received fueled his passion, ultimately deciding to make a mark in the industry.

Portraying a Dingku in the web series “Ehool” has been a profoundly enriching experience for Jackson. “The character I embodied closely mirrored my own life experiences, making the role feel like a natural extension of myself,” he reflects. The relationships he built with fellow cast members and the guidance of his teachers, Oja Gyanand and Oja Tenzing, were instrumental in preparing for his role. They delved into the arts of acting, dance, and creative expression, selecting roles based on each actor’s unique traits.

This comprehensive preparation enabled Jackson to connect deeply with his character, resulting in a compelling performance. The journey of filming “Ehool” has been filled with unforgettable moments. Jackson recalls a particularly tense shoot with his close-knit group of friends, Lungdai, Kusun and Malangba. “One standout occasion was when our tight-knit group came together for a shoot. The director was so overwhelmed by the tension that he declared, ‘If I stay, this scene will never work!’ and made a swift exit,” Jackson remembers.

Another memorable scene involved Lungdai’s romantic date, which took a staggering 25 retakes due to the cast’s awkwardness and missed cues. Despite the frustrations, these moments were filled with laughter and camaraderie, turning into cherished memories.

The success of “Ehool” has had a profound impact on Jackson’s career and the Manipuri cinema platform. Initially recognized solely for his dancing skills, Jackson started gaining recognition as an actor as the series gained traction. “The success of ‘Ehool’ has had a profound impact on the Manipuri cinema platform, especially for emerging artists in Manipur,” he notes. The positive feedback and public recognition fueled his determination to excel. Despite the challenges of public recognition, the success of “Ehool” has provided a platform for emerging talents in Manipur, instilling renewed hope in the local film industry.

Jackson believes that audiences resonate with his character as Dingku in “Ehool” because he portrays someone relatable. “My character aspires to become a great dancer despite lacking parental support, cherishes friendships, and consistently helps others in need. These universal traits allow people from various walks of life to connect with my character on a personal level,” he explains. The series emphasizes themes of unity, love, and brotherhood, resonating deeply with the viewers.

One of the most memorable bloopers occurred during a vocal dubbing session at Sir Biju’s “Nongpok Ningthou Studio.” “The session was filled with laughter, creating unforgettable moments that bind the team closer together,” Jackson shares.

Among the cast, Malangba (Priyo) often forgets his lines, keeping the team on their toes. Jackson and Lungdai, known for their playful energy, often indulge in harmless pranks, keeping spirits high on set. The most challenging scene in “Ehool” was Priyo’s character’s death. “The emotional weight of the scene, coupled with the script’s timing, heightened the cast’s emotions. Our strong camaraderie and mutual understanding with the director allowed us to film the scene in a single take,” Jackson says. This was a testament to their unity and empathy, allowing them to navigate through difficult terrain and deliver a poignant performance.

Jackson recently celebrated the successful launch of the Manipuri movie “Khongpham Ama,” which received overwhelming praise. He is currently engaged in music video and has several exciting projects in the pipeline, including feature films and new web series.

The success of “Ehool” is attributed to the discipline, determination, and relentless hard work of the entire cast and crew. “None of our accomplishments would have been possible without the unity and cohesive efforts of the entire cast and crew,” Jackson acknowledges. Key contributors include Sir Biju, the VFX editor, Brother Brigesh, the cinematographer, Brother Tenzing, the scriptwriter, and Sir Gyanand, the director. Their collective dedication and support have been instrumental in the project’s success. One aspect of “Ehool” that the audience might not fully grasp is the underlying connection between the characters Dingku and Leina. “Their shared struggles
for self-fulfillment and the pursuit of their dreams create a unique bond, adding a rich layer to the storyline,” Jackson reveals. This unexpected dynamic between Dingku and Leina adds a rich layer to the storyline, making it morecompelling.

Jackson Yumnam’s journey from a background dancer to a recognized actor in Manipuri cinema is a testament to his passion and dedication. His work in “Ehool” has not only elevated his career but also contributed to the growth and recognition of the Manipuri film industry. With several upcoming projects, Jackson continues to inspire and captivate audiences with his talent and commitment to the arts.

Bindiya Moirangthem
As we delve deeper into the world of Ehool, it’s time to shine a light on another remarkable talent from the series. Next, we are excited to introduce Bindiya Moirangthem, one of the stars of “Ehool,” has an inspiring journey that has made her a notable figure in Manipuri cinema. Bindiya shares her experiences in this groundbreaking series, highlighting her unique path into the Manipuri film industry and the impact of the series on her career. “My name is Bindiya Moirangthem. I am from Heirok Part II. I graduated from Waikhom Mani Women’s College Thoubal. I have two younger sisters and a younger brother, making me the eldest of four. My father is a government employee, and my mother is a housewife.”

Bindiya’s journey into acting began early. She always had a keen interest in performing arts, which led her to participate in various acting workshops and dance classes. “I have been interested in acting since childhood. At around 17, I joined acting workshops and dance classes. During my graduation, I joined another dance class in Thoubal under Ma’am Babycha Asem, which led to my break in a music video album. My journey started from there, and after meeting with Da Gyanand, I got several opportunities, including ‘Ehool’ and other movies like ‘Hiyainu’ and ‘Khongpham Ama.’

“Leina, the character Bindiya portrays in “Ehool,” is a bold and straightforward individual, which contrasts with Bindiya’s own soft-spoken nature. “Leina is quite different from me. Preparing for this role involved changing my body language and voice, as Leina is straightforward, smart, and bold, whereas I am soft-spoken. The experience was about making these changes and seeing how people perceived me as Leina versus my real self.

“The role required significant preparation, especially in terms of adapting her natural demeanor to fit Leina’s character. “It’s indeed a very interesting character because in reality, she is totally opposite to how I am. Preparation was mainly for the body language and voice of the character. I had to change my walk for the character too.”

Bindiya fondly recalls several memorable moments on the set of “Ehool.” “One memorable moment was the scene where I had to slap Dingku (Jackson Yumnam) hard. The director wanted it perfect, and after the shot, Jackson didn’t talk to me for a while. Another highlight was the climax scene of ‘Ehool 2,’ which was the toughest scene I’ve done. It required multiple takes, but our director
ensured we gave our best, and I was satisfied with my performance.” These experiences, while challenging, contributed to her growth as an actor. “The climax scene of ‘Ehool 2’ was one of the toughest scenes I have ever done till now. Our director had to reshoot it thrice to get the scene perfect. It was really hard, but he made sure we gave our best, and we got it. I was surprisingly satisfied with my own performance that day.”

The success of “Ehool” has had a profound impact on Bindiya’s career. “By the grace of God, ‘Ehool’ received positive feedback, which has uplifted my career. This project is special to me as it has set a high bar in Manipuri cinema with its fresh and unique approach.”

Bindiya believes that the series has not only advanced her career but also set a new standard for Manipuri cinema. “This project will always be special for me because yes, it has uplifted my career indeed. Every cast member involved in this project made it up to an extent. And yes, this will surely have an impact on Manipuri Cinema because the treatment our Director has given in this project
is totally fresh and unique.”

Reflecting on the audience’s response, Bindiya notes the different reactions to her character over the two seasons. “In season 1, everyone hated Leina, which I took as a compliment. In season 2, the audience understood her story and felt her pain, showing me a lot of love.”

She finds it gratifying that viewers have connected with Leina’s complex personality. “When we look around every friend’s circle has a Leina, so yes, I feel it resonates widely with the audience. Season 1 everyone hated me, but yeah, I took that as a compliment. In season 2, the audience saw why I was being so rude, they felt the pain I had in me, they understood my story.”

Looking ahead, Bindiya has several projects lined up. “I have a few upcoming movies and web series, and I look forward to challenging roles and award winning projects.”

She remains enthusiastic about future opportunities and aims to continue growing as an actor. “The schedules are already set. And yeah, I am hoping for some award-winning projects and challenging characters in the future.”

Bindiya wishes the audience could see more of Leina’s hidden depth. “Leina may appear rude and heartless, but she has a soft, kind, and loving side shaped by her hardships. I hope the audience sees this side in future episodes.”

As a female actress in Manipur, Bindiya feels respected and valued in the industry. “In our industry, women are respected and treated very well, reflecting Manipur’s culture and traditions.”

The work environment on set has been supportive and inspiring. “The work environment is positive and supportive. The main challenge is ensuring safety during nighttime shoots, but overall, the environment is inspiring and collaborative.”

Bindiya Moirangthem’s journey in “Ehool” showcases her dedication and talent, highlighting the significant strides being made in Manipuri cinema. Her portrayal of Leina, along with her reflections on the series, offers a glimpse into the hard work and passion behind the scenes.

As “Ehool” continues to captivate audiences with its trailblazing approach and heartfelt storytelling, it stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of Manipuri cinema.
