Ourtimes: Thanglalsoun, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us today. Your journey in football has been inspiring, especially given the challenges you’ve faced. Let’s start by getting to know you a little better. Can you tell us about your family background and where you’re from?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: My roots are from a village in Churachandpur, specifically Khanpi village. My grandfather served in the Manipur Rifles, so my father, his brothers, and his sister were born and raised in Imphal. I have one older brother, one older sister, and three younger sisters. Due to the ongoing conflict, we had to leave our home in the National Games Village, Lamphel, Imphal West.
Ourtimes: Football seems to run in your family. What inspired you to play, and when did your journey in football begin?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: Football is in our blood. My grandpa played in district-level tournaments in Churachandpur, and my father represented Manipur in national-level tournaments. I followed in their footsteps. I started playing when I was very young, about three years old, though I don’t remember the exact age.
Ourtimes: Did you have to leave school to focus on football? What were the early challenges you faced?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: My father didn’t allow me to leave school. So, after school and during holidays, I’d go to the field near my house and play with friends. My mother was against me playing; she wanted me to study instead. Honestly, I didn’t face many challenges because my parents, family, church, and community were very supportive and helped me through prayer.

Ourtimes: What has been the highest point in your footballing career so far?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: The day I got called up for India U-17 was the highest point so far.
Ourtimes: We know the conflict in Manipur has affected you in ways we can’t fully understand, and we’re sorry for what you and your family have endured. Can you share a bit about the trauma or what happened?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: Let us try and forget the bitter past. Truth will prevail.
Ourtimes: You must be missing home, but has signing with an ISL club lifted your spirits despite the challenges?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: Signing with an ISL club at such a young age has definitely lifted my spirits. However, it’s also equally challenging. You have to put in more effort so that your talents are recognized at the senior level. I’m trying my best to keep myself fit physically, technically, and tactically to be on par with the senior players in the club.

Ourtimes: Now, tell us about your footballing icon, your ambitions as a footballer, and your dream club.
Thanglalsoun Gangte: Apart from representing my country, I’ve always dreamt of playing in top European clubs, especially in the EPL. Messi is my icon. Despite being one of the greatest footballers, he remains so humble, which is what I admire most. Moreover, I see in him the complete art of football.
Ourtimes: Lastly, before this question becomes too old and irrelevant, please pick between Messi and Ronaldo?
Thanglalsoun Gangte: Lionel Messi.
Ourtimes: Thank you for sharing your story with us, Thanglalsoun. We wish you all the best in your career and hope to see you achieve all your dreams.
